CHARACTER'S NAME: Archibald Stuart, aka "the Scotsman"
GENDER: Male
RACE: White
AGE: Thirty

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 6' 2". A rugged Scotsman. Light brown hair, blue eyes. Several scars on his arms and torso from military service and other adventures.

WEAKNESSES and STRENGTHS: An experienced traveler with an outdoors and military background. Archibald - better known as "Archie," to his employer - is both a personal servant and a bodyguard. He is very strong. Very loyal. He'll try to stay close to his master and he'll try to obey orders. However, like other dudes recently arrived from Europe and the Eastern states, he knows very little about the West.

Archie plays the Scottish fiddle and the bagpipes. Both musical instruments are in his luggage. He is an expert rifleman. He's an expert knife fighter who can be helpful in settling a tavern brawl. He has only average ability when fighting with a revolver.

Archie's fine manners, quiet ways, and nice clothing may be confusing in some places. Some observers may think that he's a wealthy businessman or a "foreign prince." Native Americans and others may be surprised when we wears a kilt and plays the bagpipes.

GEAR and WEAPONS: Archie is a "gentleman's gentleman." When he arrives by train in Two Springs, he has two steamer trunks. He's a servant, not an rich man, but Arthur Santiago has high standards and he insists that servants "dress right at all times."

On the trail, Archie will dress like most cowboys. In town, his dress will be similar to his employer's dress. Archie will wear a black business suit, with vest and tie, polished shoes, and a derby hat. He has a kilt and other Scottish ceremonial gear in his steamer trunk. This can be worn on very special occasions, when he plays the bagpipes.

Like Arthur Santiago, Archie carries an Army Colt revolver. He also carries a Scottish dirk, engraved with the words, "To the Honorable Scotsman from JSM, in Virginia, 1863." The initials "JSM" stand for John Singleton Mosby, a Confederate Army officer.

Archie often carries large sums of money for his employer. Often, when payment is due for supplies or lodging, Santiago will say, "My man Archie will pay you." Archie will step forward to settle the bill. The money belongs to Santiago, not to Archie Stuart.

TYPE OF CHARACTER: Servant and bodyguard, foreign dude.

ASSETS: Like the servants of old Europe, Archie gives loyalty and he expects loyalty in return. He doesn't have any special influence. However, if he is injured or in need of special assistance, he will expect his employer to provide him with the necessary assistance.

Archie is paid $100 at the start of each month by Arthur Santiago. He's a thrifty Scotsman, so he has saved $500, which is hidden in his luggage. Santiago pays for many of Archie's expenses, including travel, lodging, meals, some clothing, and weapons.

BACKGROUND: Archie is the son of a gamekeeper who serves one of the famous families in the Scottish highlands. As a boy, he learned how to hunt and he also learned how to "keep his place and hold his tongue." One night, he killed two poachers who had invaded his lord's estate. Embarassed by the incident, the Scottish lord asked Archie to leave Scotland. Archie became an orderly to the famous Sir William Cambridge.

Sir William Cambridge was one of Queen Victoria's "unofficial ambassadors to the Confederate States of America." He was a military observer who traveled with General Lee's army. Archibald Stuart was his servant. On one occasion, Archie saved the life of John Singleton Mosby, when Mosby was attacked by Northern assasins. The incident was not publicly reported, because of the involvement of English soldiers, but Mosby was forever grateful and he presented Archie with the engraved dirk that Archie still carries.

After the Civil War ended, Archie stayed in Canada. His references were excellent. Eventually, he moved to Boston, where he was hired by Arthur Santiago. Santiago sometimes jokes about having "a Confederate soldier for a bodyguard."
