The Rules of Gone West

1) The "Admin" acts as the moderator between players if there is a problem. Please contact him at Admin if you need any help or have suggestions. (The Admin has the right to edit any posts that does not conform to the rules and policies of this site and/or the mysteryandmagic host guidelines.)

2) The setting is the blazing old west and all storylines should relate to that period in time. Try to have your characters dress, act (and talk if you can) in that period.

This means there is no sci-fi space weapons, no magic, no automatic assault rifles and no pickup trucks.

There are lots of other fun things: pistols, rifles, dynamite, nitro, horses, carts, wild men and daring women. There are saloons, mines, shops, farms, ranches, banks, stage coaches, railroads, and so on ...

3) In free form role play, you are limited only by the setting and your imagination. Keep your character(s) reasonable. Keep your character(s) balanced. (No one is perfect. Everyone has flaws and weaknesses.) Play the character in their role whether they are a sinner or a saint.

i.e. if he is a gun man, expect him to get into gunfights, and more likely than not he will meet an early death in a shoot out

i.e. if she's a sodbuster's wife, well expect her to help running the farm and raising some children

i.e. if he's the town preacher, expect him to be citing the bible and giving sermons

4) Interacting with other players and NPCs (non player characters) is extremely important and adds to your own fun and game enjoyment. Post actions so that others can follow into the story and participate too. Invite others and encourage them to join in.

5) If you are not in a group and want to, you can try to meet up with others in saloons or common places. Don't be shy to talk to the NPCs to get information and to mingle with them if other players are not around.

6) Posting anonymously can be a lot of fun. You post adding a second person into the scene with your character. This can solve slow periods if you are traveling alone and allows you to create your own action. (No one can whine if you shoot down a person that you created and had been posting for anonymously).

7) NO OBSCENE MATERIAL: This is not a sex site. There should be nothing sexually explicit and no graphic detail. Can there be suggestive postings? YES. Can there be romance and some risky moments? OF COURSE! But the bottom line - nothing offensive or graphic.

8) Your characters need to eat and drink! Buy them food and find them water. When you travel think about the need to eat and sleep. They need to be warm so buy clothes, blankets and something to start a fire. If they need protection buy them guns and remember you use bullets. Bullets are not endless, most guns (pistols are six shooters so remember to RELOAD and that it takes time to do so. The only thing more important than a good gun is money.

9) TRAVEL: See travel and ranch sizes in the OOC Forum under Travel Times & Ranch Sizes.

10) TERRAIN: Keep this in mind when you post. Deserts are sandy hot places and typically you'll travel slower. Without water you dehydrate and die! Dense forests you travel slowly as you blaze a trail and you risk getting lost. Mountainous areas are hazardous for rock slides and steep climbing hinders and/or eliminates horse travel. Towns generally have boardwalks to facilitate walking between buildings, however, beware of horses and carts.

11) MONEY: The green stuff or gold makes the world go around. You need to pay for booze, the hotel room, bribes, supplies, services in town and so on. Your money is not unlimited and it doesn't come from some magical wallet. I encourage you to earn it the old fashioned way, you can get a job in town, work a farm, do some "odd jobs", rob someone, gamble and so on. Money is not accounted for, use your common sense in what you can or cannot afford.

12) REPUTATION: This is something more important than money though it won't keep your stomach full. Either you develop a good or a bad reputation. For a gunman a bad reputation might help you intimidate people or get by in bluffing a gunfight. For a good guy, it serves to attract other good people and gives you the righteous fight. Every lady knows the value of having a good reputation in attracting the right men and maintaining relations with the other ladies in society. Good people typically work hard for their money and may be seen as "church goers". Good people are normally suspicious of bad people and try to avoid them if politely possible. Bad people typically like to take advantage of good people since its easier than working for it themselves. They push themselves onto others through brute force, manipulation, money or a fast draw.

13) CLOTHING: Dress for the west!

14) GAME MAP: The map is used for town references and ranch locations, it has a mileage scale on it that may be used or may not be used, that is up to the individual player. We do not count mileage or times travelled in Gone West, common sense is used when travelling from point to point.
