Background:
Bronwyn was born to 'Lady' Helen Bentley and Paddy Murphy. Her mother was a daughter of a viscount in England, but married beneath her and was promptly disowned. She had fallen in love with an Irish dock worker and the two moved back to a small fishing village in Ireland after the marriage. Bronwyn's father was a charmer, but not wise with money and often gave in to the impulse to gamble. The family never had much, but they were loved and that is what counted.

Bronwyn was the middle daughter in a brood of six. She an older brother, three older sisters and two younger sisters. All the girls were beautiful in their own ways, each assigned a loving nickname by the parents. Bronwyn's was her mother's Diamond, or so she was told. All the children were taught manners from their mother, who had a former education. Though they spoke like gentry, all children had their father's thick Irish brogue.

When Bronwyn was ten, her mother died in childbirth. Neither mother or child survived. Paddy took it hard, drinking and gambling his pain away. Soon, all that was left was enough money to get out of the country to escape debtors prison. They boarded a ship bound for America, where they would be out of loan shark's hands.

First, the family lived in New York. That was were Bronwyn's older sisters and one of her younger sisters found love. They married decent Americans. When the rest of the family had enough money, Paddy once again moved them, this time to Virgina. They were there when the Civil War broke out. If it weren't for the battles in their back yards, the War wouldn't have touched them much. But, after seeing brave men die on the battle field, Bronwyn's brother volunteered in a war he had no business in. He ended up dying, breaking the family's heart once again.

And, in true Paddy fashion, he took up gambling and drinking once more. It was then that he fell into a large debt with the charming Cole Peterson. When the man came by to collect the money the family did not have, he saw something he wanted instead: Bronwyn. So, with a heavy heart, Paddy all but sold his daughter to the highest bidder. They left with little time for the young girl to pack. With a tearful goodbye, Bronwyn never saw her family again.

At first, when Cole was doing well, all seemed to be okay. He was a flirt, but kind enough. Still, there always seemed to be a dark side to him, so Bronwyn did her best to please him. She was still proud and bold, at the time, but that soon changed with Cole's luck went south. He became abusive, first verbally then physically. Though many would say it couldn't be done, he broke Bronwyn's firey Irish spirit.

After a game of cards that turned ugly on a riverboat, Cole decided it was time to move on. He decided to move West and purchased a ticket for him and Bronwyn. Their next stop was Two Springs.

Write a short scenario: Bronwyn stook on the platform, an old hanky in her hands, twisted with worry. Cole and told her to stay where she was while he bought the tickets. She knew better than to cross him, so she didn't move a muscle. She stared at the ground, too ashamed to make eye contact with anyone around her. She knew the pity she would see, because an ugly story was told by the bruises on her face.

She was wearing her mother's dress. It was baggy, since her mother was not a small woman, but it was all that fit her now. Hidden beneath the fabric was the beginnings of a bump, her baby. Cole was not excited about the child. He said he had no use for one. This scared Bronwyn more than anything could, because she knew what he was capable of. She would do anything to protect the child inside her. Which is why she bought the gun from the peddler. It he tried to kill her child, she would show him what was what. Bronwyn could not kill him for herself, but for her child's sake, she would do what she must.

"Let's go." The rough voice cause her to start a little, looking up wide eyes. The handsome Cole stood before her, a cruel sneer on his face. Nodding, she quickly picked her bag up and let him lead her onto the train.
