"You think your that good with pistol huh son?" he cocked his shotgun.

"That is not the case." He put up his hands although he could've probable shot him before he shot the shotgun, he was that quick and then he continued "If you kill me, you will just have the sheriff out here tomorrow with a rope. I work for the county."

"Well what hell do ya think youse doing on my property with that sign." The man said.

"Well thank you for asking sir, this property belongs to the county know for the unpaid taxes from some years ago, you should have gotten the notice in the mail." George said

The man looked dumb founded and George went to his brief case and pulled out his document and showed the paper to the man and said "As you can read, you have old taxes unpaid from some years ago."

He looked at the man who obviously couldn't read and nodded and said "Well how much do I owe ya?"

George figured the man was to proud to read but didn't want to admit it, he gave a frown and said "I am sorry sir, as you can see the figure is high $300"

"What I don't have no $300 dollars." And started cocking his shotgun figuring he would at least kill this fella, if an he was loosing his land.

"Hold on mister, put the shotgun down, maybe I could help you out but lets go back to your place and talk over some dinner." George said

The man and George walked back to his shack he had 5 kids running around all barefoot and livestock running around. The man first talked to his wife and then let George come in and have some dinner. The man's wife said she and the kids had already eaten and then gave George and the man each had a big bowl of rabbit stew.

George said "I don't want to see you and your family leave your home. Well you know sometimes files at the courthouse get lost and stuff but I am going to have to bribe the clerk and I, well I need something as well for putting my neck on the line, If the county finds out I could lose my job or worse, go to jail."

George left with all the man's money $22, his plow horse, some antique jewelry his wife had, the man's shotgun and his gratitude.

That night all he could think about was the man's kids and wife and how hungry they looked and how they only had ragged clothes on. The more he thought about the more he didn't believe that they had eaten that night. Winter was coming and he couldn't help but keep the faces of the man's children out of his mind and wondered if they would be able to make it through the winter.

The next day he went back and the man said "Honestly mister, I don't have anymore?"

George said "I am sorry sir, I got your address wrong, you don't owe the county any money." He gave the man back his stuff. The women hugged George and he left, from know on he only rob the greedy and the rich.
