Characters Name: James Horne
Gender: Male
Race: White
Age: 25
Physical Description:
Horne has a raw face, evidently weathered by countless days of blazing heat. His skin is tan, with a few sun blotches on his arms and neck. He has short brown hair that he combs back and dark green eyes. Horne has an average build, and is fairly muscular. Horne also has some facial hair, but in no particular style. He just lets it grow in and eventually shaves it if he has a razor.
Weaknesses & Strengths-
Weaknesses: Horne is young, and though he’s worked through many problems and knows just about everything there is to know about ranches, he is still inexperienced in some departments. Horne is also a good-natured person if you care to find out, unlike many people in the west. He doesn’t want trouble, which can be a bad thing in an age of trigger-happy gunfighters and crazy gamblers.
Strengths: Knows everything there is to know about ranches. He is fairly experienced using his gun from countless times shooting bottles off fences with his friends. Knows how to survive fairly decent in the “open range”.
Gear & Weapons-
Horse: Horne named him “Cal”, which is short for “Callous”. He was very bitter in his youth when Horne first bought him, thus his name. A four year old Chestnut who was bred in Montana. No distinguishing marks, except for his brand, which is Horne’s initials “J.H.” with horns coming out the side of the J and H like a steer.
Weapons: Horne carries a Remington Model 1869, Single Action Army, .44 Caliber Revolver on his right hip in a brown leather holster and gun belt (50 cartridge loops). He carries it only for protection, he’s no gunfighter or killer.
Worn on Person: Long John’s, wool socks, blue Levi Straus jeans and brown leather belt, white cotton work shirt or red long-sleeve flannel shirt, brown leather vest, black Stetson hat, and brown leather boots with an etching of wild buffalo. Horne also wears a red bandana and carries a small pocket knife and a leather wallet, which currently holds about $73.25.
Worn on Horse: Western leather saddle with necessities (bridle, blanket, etc.), black leather saddlebags, and gray bedroll tied with brown leather straps. Horne also ties his leather chaps to his bedroll, because they won’t fit in his saddlebags.
Keeps In Saddlebags: White cotton work shirt or red long-sleeve flannel shirt (whichever not worn), a couple extra bandanas (uses for rags), small tin coffee pot and cup, small bag of roasted coffee beans, bag of jerky and hardtack, two cans of pork beans, box of matches, leather gloves, and a deck of 1876 New York-style playing cards (a gift). Horne also carries a box of 100 bullets for his revolver, as well as a 2 oz. tube of gun grease.
What Type of Character: Ranch Hand
Assets: $113.25 (All that’s left from working on various ranches)
Background:
Horne was born James Horne on November 30th, 1852, somewhere in Colorado. He knew nothing of his father, but that he worked on a ranch. His mother, a prostitute, died in his youth and James was left in the care of a ranch foreman named Martin Korster. Martin taught him the ropes early on and Horne (as he is called everywhere, except with Martin) became a ranch hand from practically the d ay he was born. At age 24, already weathered form years of ranch-life, Horne left the ranch he grew up on to start a life all his own and found that near Montana. There he earned enough money to buy “Cal” and left for somewhere new, and hopefully his permanent home.
