Background:
From a coastal Delaware farm family joined the army to escape what he found to be a boring life. As a child he was fond of explosives and fire which led him to the Field Artillery. Was wounded several times during the War Between the States, including severe burns from a powder explosion all over one side. Ended the war a Sergeant and gun commander.

Accepted post with the Provost Marshall at Fort Monroe which got him interested in law enforcment. His next assignment was as an independent agent tracking down former sesech raiders, wanted soldiers, Union draft dodgers, and men who'd comitted federal crimes in lieu of a Deputy US Marshal
